Queenslanders will get the chance to celebrate the State's 150th birthday in 2009 by suggesting new names for key bridges.
Turning 150 is special – as is the chance to name public infrastructure as a lasting commemoration of the integral role roads and bridges have played in building Queensland's prosperity.
Main Roads will choose significant bridges on State-controlled roads across Queensland and invite local community members to suggest names that celebrate something special about their area.
Name nominations need to inherently represent an important part of the community's history or have contributed to the cultural identity that has won a lasting place in the community's memories.
Possible names could honour an individual or group that has made a significant contribution to the area, be a local native plant or animal, a geographical feature, or an event or tradition.
The project will kick off in early 2009 with regional Main Roads offices calling for name submissions on chosen bridges through local media.
A decision-making panel including community representatives will recommend a new name based on public submissions.
