Q150 Steam Train FAQ
Q. How can I buy a ticket for a ride on the Q150 Steam Train?
A. Bookings can be made by phoning the Q150 booking hotline – 1800 QLD150 (1800 753 150) or through any QR Travel Centre.
Q. Do I have to book accommodation?
A. You can arrange your accommodation through the Traveltrain booking service.
Q. How much will it cost?
A. Prices differ depending on the length of the journey. View the list of fares and Conditions of Travel
Q. How do I pay for my ticket?
A. You can pay by credit card when you phone, go to your nearest QR Travel Centre, or a nominated Traveltrain Station ticketing office.
Q. How do I collect my ticket?
A. Your ticket will be posted to you at an address you provide.
Q. Do I have to book a full sector?
A. No. You can book a ticket between any two stations indicated on the itinerary where it state Passengers on/off, provided seats are available.
For example:
- You could travel from Brisbane to Nambour and then return on a Citytrain service.
- You could travel from Brisbane to Gympie, stay overnight in Gympie (accommodation can be arranged when you book your ticket) and travel back on the Tilt Train.
- You could travel on the train for a number of days, stay overnight at each stop, enjoy some of the optional tours on offer and return by train, bus or plane.

Q. What is the refund policy?
A. Provided the reservation is cancelled prior to the departure of the service from the passenger's departure station, the fare will be refunded in full. If the passenger fails to board the train or cancel the booking prior to the designated departure, no refund will be issued.
Q. Is the train disabled accessible?
A. Yes. A disabled accessible carriage with a limited number of wheelchair places will be available on most of the sectors. It will not be available for travel between Cairns and Mareeba or on the journey between Toowoomba and Wallangarra. The lines to Mareeba and Wallangarra are no longer serviced by QR, so stations have not been upgraded to cater for disabled access.
Q. How much luggage can I take?
A. Passengers may carry on one item of luggage free of charge. The maximum weight for the luggage is 20 kilograms, and the maximum size is 180 linear centimetres (the sum of the height plus the length plus the depth of an item). More detailed information is included in the Conditions of Travel
Q. Will I be able to buy food on board the train?
A. There will be a limited range of snack food refreshments available for sale in the heritage dining car.
Q. Is alcohol available for purchase on the train?
A. No. Alcohol is not permitted to be carried or consumed on the train.
Q. Is the train airconditioned?
A. No. The train is made up of heritage wooden carriages pulled by steam locomotives. The carriages range in age from 70 to 106 years. Some of the carriages have fans and all the windows open. Fortunately the train will not be travelling during the hottest part of the year. It would be wise to ensure you pack some warm clothes if you are travelling on some of the western sectors (eg. August in Stanthorpe can be quite cold).
Q. Are there toilets on the train?
A. Yes. Every seating carriage has a toilet at either end of the carriage. The disabled accessible carriage has a disabled accessible toilet.
Q. Are there any activities planned for the arrival of the train at various locations?
A. Local councils are planning various Welcome Ceremony celebrations while the train is in town. Contact your local council for more information.
